The project is implemented with financial support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cycladespreservationfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"556\">Cyclades Preservation Fund<\/strong><\/a> and scientific backing from experts in hydrogeology, meteorology, and environmental management.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e8dbd2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e8dbd2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Purpose and Vision<\/b><\/p><p>Andros, an island with a long history of sustainable water management, is now facing increasing pressure on its water resources. Springs are drying up, being abandoned, or degrading, while climate change, rising domestic use, and tourism development are further stressing the balance of natural water sources.<\/p><p>The project aspires to highlight the value of the island\u2019s springs as common natural and cultural assets, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable water management through community-based monitoring Activities<\/b><\/p><p>The project activities include:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recording of springs in North and South Andros<\/b>\u00a0through field research, as the springs in Central Andros\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/androsresearchcenter.org\/en\/traditional-water-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have already been documented in our previous initiative<\/a>, in collaboration with residents and local informants.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Measurement of physicochemical water parameters<\/b>\u00a0(pH, conductivity, TDS, temperature) using specialized equipment.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Design and pilot development of a digital platform<\/b>, which will host data, maps, and descriptions of the springs, with open public access.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Collection and consolidation of meteorological data<\/b>\u00a0from existing stations on Andros, along with supplementary research.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recording traditional knowledge and practices<\/b>\u00a0related to the \u201ccultivation\u201d of springs through interviews and participatory research.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Preparing reports and disseminating results,<\/strong>\u00a0aiming to develop a methodology that could be applied in other regions as well.<\/li><\/ul><p>The initiative will be supported by an\u00a0<b>Advisory Board<\/b>, including members of the Scientific Team, representatives of local and regional authorities and organizations, as well as the Cyclades Preservation Fund.<\/p><p>In a later phase of the project, a weather station is also planned to be installed, along with training of volunteers for long-term spring partnership with Georgetown University Qatar reflects international interest in traditional resource management and offers technical training, scientific support, and student participation in field research.\u00a0As part of this collaboration, the first measuring instruments have already been installed, digital recording tools have been tested, and initial sampling measurements have been health, as well as places of connection between the inhabitants and their most vital natural resource \u2014 water \u2014 through collective management. Documenting and monitoring the springs will contribute to the assessment and public awareness of their current state, a first step toward reversing their degradation. It is also expected to strengthen the collective sense of ownership and recognition of the springs as shared environmental goods, passed down from generation to generation.
