Their work focuses on recording <strong data-start=\"809\" data-end=\"832\">diurnal Lepidoptera<\/strong> (butterflies) and <strong data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"862\">Odonata<\/strong> (dragonflies and damselflies).<\/p><p data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"1305\">The two researchers have been on Andros since 29 June. With the support of members of our team and the scientific staff of the BCL, they have already made a number of valuable observations at sampling sites around springs and <em data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1131\">havouzes<\/em> (traditional water reservoirs), building on the spring inventory and mapping carried out over the past three years by our organization as part of the Andros Springs project.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1w86e17\" data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1327\">Butterfly Survey<\/h3><p data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1581\">Butterfly surveys are conducted using either <strong data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1404\">15-minute point counts (P)<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1435\">random observations (R)<\/strong>. Point counts involve actively searching for and recording butterfly species for a period of 15 minutes within a 50-metre radius of the observer.<\/p><p data-start=\"1583\" data-end=\"2026\">Butterflies are captured only when necessary to ensure reliable species identification, using a butterfly net provided by the Biodiversity Conservation Laboratory (BCL). Species are identified in the field using a field guide, while uncertain records are verified through photographic documentation. At least one documentary photograph is taken for each species, following the guidelines of the <strong data-start=\"1978\" data-end=\"2025\">Apollo National Butterfly Monitoring Scheme<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2028\" data-end=\"2169\">The geographic coordinates of all observations are recorded using the <strong data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2111\">Locus Map<\/strong> application in the <strong data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2140\">WGS84<\/strong> coordinate reference system.<\/p><p data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2529\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">In parallel, efforts will be made to establish a <strong data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2263\">permanent butterfly monitoring transect<\/strong> following the protocol of the Apollo National Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. If successfully established, the transect will be surveyed annually, creating a long-term dataset on the butterflies of Andros that will enable the assessment of population trends over data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"18\">Odonata Survey<\/h3><p data-start=\"20\" data-end=\"446\">Sampling of <strong data-start=\"32\" data-end=\"43\">Odonata<\/strong> (dragonflies and damselflies) during the survey is carried out using three complementary methods, with the primary objective of collecting presence\u2013absence data. Researchers conduct point-based surveys of adult individuals and, in order to confirm whether species are breeding at each spring, they also search for <strong data-start=\"358\" data-end=\"369\">exuviae<\/strong> (shed larval skins) and collect larvae from the sediment where they develop.<\/p><p data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"1158\">Adult Odonata are surveyed using <strong data-start=\"481\" data-end=\"511\">15-minute point counts (P)<\/strong>. Each point count consists of actively searching for and recording species for 15 minutes within a 50-metre radius of the observer. Species are identified either through photographic documentation or, where necessary, by temporarily capturing individuals using an insect net provided by the <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"849\">Biodiversity Conservation Laboratory (BCL)<\/strong>. All individuals are released immediately after handling. Species identification is carried out either in the field using a field guide or subsequently from photographic records. The geographic coordinates of all observations are recorded using a GPS application in the <strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1129\">WGS84<\/strong> coordinate reference system.<\/p><p data-start=\"1160\" data-end=\"1740\">Larval sampling is conducted using a small hand-held sieve (approximately 15\u201330 cm in diameter). During sampling, the sieve is placed on the selected substrate and moved actively across its surface to collect sediment together with aquatic macroinvertebrates, including Odonata larvae. The collected material is then examined, and once identified, the larvae are carefully returned to their original habitat. If field identification is not possible, selected specimens are collected for detailed laboratory examination using a stereomicroscope and specialized identification keys.<\/p><p data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"2154\">The collection of Odonata exuviae is a widely used method for surveying and monitoring this group of aquatic insects in both running and standing freshwater ecosystems. Exuviae are searched for along the riparian zone surrounding each sampling site. Species identification will be carried out <strong data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2046\">ex situ<\/strong> at the Biodiversity Conservation Laboratory using a stereomicroscope and specialized identification guides.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"cf8zl3\" data-start=\"2156\" data-end=\"2178\">Existing Knowledge<\/h3><p data-start=\"2180\" data-end=\"2678\">The current checklist of butterfly species recorded on Andros includes <strong data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2265\">30 species<\/strong> and is based on the geospatial database maintained by the Biodiversity Conservation Laboratory (BCL). Among these, <strong data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2405\"><em data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2403\">Zerynthia polyxena<\/em><\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2434\"><em data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2432\">Hipparchia senthes<\/em><\/strong> are of particular conservation interest, as both are protected under <strong data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2541\">Greek Presidential Decree 67\/1981<\/strong>. In addition, <strong data-start=\"2556\" data-end=\"2580\"><em data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2578\">Zerynthia polyxena<\/em><\/strong> is protected under the <strong data-start=\"2604\" data-end=\"2641\">EU Habitats Directive (92\/43\/EEC)<\/strong>, where it is listed in <strong data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2677\">Annex IV<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"3078\">The current checklist of Odonata on Andros comprises <strong data-start=\"2733\" data-end=\"2747\">24 species<\/strong> and is based on published scientific literature as well as observations submitted through the <strong data-start=\"2842\" data-end=\"2857\">iNaturalist<\/strong> citizen science platform. Of particular interest is <strong data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"2939\"><em data-start=\"2912\" data-end=\"2937\">Cordulegaster buchholzi<\/em><\/strong>, a species endemic to southern Greece, with its core distribution centred on the Cycladic islands of <strong data-start=\"3041\" data-end=\"3051\">Andros<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3053\" data-end=\"3062\">Tinos<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3077\">Naxos<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1bc98ay\" data-start=\"3080\" data-end=\"3098\">First Findings<\/h3><p data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3359\">Examples from the first field surveys can be seen in the photographs above, together with the scientific names of the recorded species.
