Actions for the Andriot Lemon

Cultivation & Processing of the Andriot Lemon – Research & Promotion Actions 2024/2025

The Andros Research Center has designed and is implementing an important project focused on the documentation, promotion, and safeguarding of the Andriot lemon as an element of the island’s intangible cultural heritage. The project is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the valuable collaboration of the Cultural Association of Livadia, concentrating on the Livadia valley — a place with a rich history and a strong tradition of lemon cultivation

.

Why is an initiative for Andros lemon production important?

The promotion of the agri-food products of our country constitutes a valuable national goal with significant economic, social, and environmental value and urgency. The preservation of agricultural activities based on sustainable practices is not only a prerequisite for food and economic security, quality of life, and safeguarding local identity, but also a critical condition for biodiversity conservation and for tackling climate change.

The agri-food tradition encompasses not only local products, but also the history and heritage of knowledge and practices related to cultivation techniques, harvesting, preservation, and processing of these goods, as well as the traditions, customs, and rituals that accompany them — all of which give meaning to human life in diverse environments.

The initiative aims to:

  • Document and highlight the cultivation, distribution, and processing of the Andriot lemon.

  • Support and promote local producers and processors.

  • Develop synergies with tourism and education.

  • Prepare a dossier for the inclusion of the Andriot lemon in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
