Actions for the Andriotic Lemon
The lemon grove of Livadia in Andros: Soundscapes of biodiversity & human stories 2025 – 2026

This action is supported by the Cycladic Identity initiative of the Museum of Cycladic Art. The Cycladic Identity initiative aims to contribute to the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of the Cycladic islands and to leave a positive impact on the daily lives of local communities, by supporting the implementation of actions for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of their Cycladic identity.
Introduction
The plain of Livadia in Andros is one of the few flat and exceptionally fertile landscapes of the island, rich in lemon trees, cypresses, and a variety of citrus fruits. Walled farms, traditional irrigation systems, and the presence of the “Great River” compose a unique rural micro-society with significant historical and environmental value.
The action is carried out with the valuable collaboration of the Cultural Association of Livadia and focuses on highlighting this special heritage and the biodiversity of the area through modern tools of documentation and interpretation.

Objectives of the Action
Highlight the traditional lemon cultivation and the ecological importance of the Livadia plain.
Connect the agricultural heritage with the visitor’s experience through creative and experiential methods.
Preserve and showcase the stories and memories of the people who cultivate or once cultivated the area.
Strengthen local identity and sustainable tourism development.
Content and Actions
The action will be implemented using contemporary methodological approaches, combining heritage interpretation, oral history, and acoustic ecology:
Recording the soundscapes of the lemon grove during different seasons and times of day, carried out by a specialized field sound recordist.
Creating an audio guide with 15 points of interest along the circular walking route, including historical information and excerpts from residents’ testimonies.
Developing a digital smartphone app (Android) with location-based activation, introducing visitors to traditional cultivation practices and the contemporary reality of the Andriot lemon.
